On the southern bank of the Potomac River, Jefferson County is home to Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, and Charles Town. History buffs, boutique shoppers, outdoorsmen, and foodies will all find something to nourish their needs.
Named for Thomas Jefferson, the area is rich in history and is the resting place for more of George Washington's relatives than any other area. A few of those Washington family homes still stand in Jefferson County today. The county is mostly known for its immaculate natural views and outdoor activities. As the easternmost county of West Virginia, it is often frequented by visitors from all over DC and Northern Virginia. Recreational and historic tourism account for an increasing number of visitors to Jefferson County as well as growing revenues.
